The guilt … It is in you … look inward, look into your own depths, learn first and foremost to know yourself!

It succeeded as correspondence truth—capturing what was factually accurate—yet failed as pragmatic truth, as something that could actually work in the lived reality of the analysis

One must wait until [the patient] has himself reached the neighbourhood of what he has repressed … one must allow the patient time … to become conversant with the resistance

Constructions aim at historical truth but must settle for narrative truth—for stories that make sense of symptoms and suffering even if they cannot claim to represent exactly what happened.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第一章「From Interpretation to Construction」

Interpretation is fundamentally an act of power: one person claims to know something about another that they cannot know themselves.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

At the time I began to work it was an established principle that interpretations should be given very sparingly.

Moreover, Klein believed that accurate interpretation creates rather than depends upon the therapeutic relationship.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第二章「The Principle of Immediate Interpretation」

I have never found that the countertransference has helped me to understand my patient better; if I may put it like this; I have found that it has helped me to understand myself better

— Govrin, Interpretation,第二章「The Question of Countertransference」(引 Klein, 2017b, p. 103)

Klein criticized contemporary uses of projective identification that focus on analyzing the analyst’s feelings, insisting instead that the analyst’s central task is to use countertransference only as a tool for understanding the patient’s internal world, not as an object of exploration in its own right.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第二章「The Question of Countertransference」

她的分析态度由一句短语标定——「unfailing desire to ascertain the truth(不懈求真之愿)」。

he had responded with what he calls “routine interpretations”— interventions that carried no emotional presence, offered no true containment, and were thus experienced by the patient as an outright rejection

the analyst’s specific action is not the delivery of theoretical insight, but a spoken interpretation at the point of urgency

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Leaving aside the physical channels of communication my impression is that her love is expressed by reverie

healthy mental growth seems to depend on truth as the living organism depends on food

When a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason

the interpretation is an actual event in an evolution of O that is common to analyst and analysand

I think I interpret mainly to let the patient know the limits of my understanding

if I make none the patient gets the impression that I understand everything. In other words, I retain some outside quality by not being quite on the mark—or even by being wrong

the opposite of play is not work but coercion

The analyst feels like interpreting, but this can spoil the process, and for the patient can seem like a kind of self-defence

The question becomes not whether truth emerges in treatment, but what kind of truth and by what means.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

the goal of the analyst is solely to obtain knowledge and to convey it

the analyst’s primary tool must be sustained, finely attuned empathy—not interpretation as revelation of hidden drive conflicts

psychoanalysis cures by the laying down of psychological structure

Kohut’s revolution was fundamentally clinical, not epistemological.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第五章「The Revolutionary Nature of Self Psychology’s Approach to Interpretation」

objective truths must always include an assessment of the observer

as he refuses to relinquish the truth of interpretation and in his efforts to base this truth on subjective element, Kohut exposes himself to irresolvable contradictions

the deeper the layers of the unconscious reached, the richer and the more stable the therapeutic result

— Govrin, Interpretation,第二章「The Shift from Content to Process」(引 Segal, in Blass, 2011, p. 1151)

not only what is being said—the actual words, stories being told—but also to the atmosphere of the session; the pressures on and expectations and anxieties that are being aroused in the analyst

If, however, the patient loses contact with his experiencing self, and projectively identifies with, and takes over, the analyst’s understanding … then that very understanding becomes an intellectual thing

the way in which the patient is inviting the analyst to enact and thus maintain his (the patient’s) inner dynamics in their current state of equilibrium

interpretation is best thought of as the quintessential container and purveyor of intersubjectivity between patient and analyst

The analyst is not only impacted by his own unconscious process in the formulation of any interpretation, not only a full participant in any analytic enactment, but partially blind to the role he plays in helping the patient to understand both of these processes.

mistakes, slips, and blind spots that serve as doors through which the analyst and the patient are transported into realms of personal encounter and self-experience that might otherwise remain inaccessible

premature interpretive closure—what he describes as attempts to reveal true truth—functions as a form of intellectual violence that forecloses possibility rather than opening it

interpretations are not the analyst’s conscious creations, but rather they are “the voice of the field”—expressions of the dynamic interpersonal space between analyst and patient

The author discusses differences between what he calls epistemological psychoanalysis (having to do with knowing and understanding), for which Freud and Klein are principal authors, and ontological psychoanalysis (having to do with being and becoming), for which Winnicott and Bion are principal architects.

— Ogden, Ontological,摘要

I view Freud and Klein as the founders of a form of psychoanalysis that is epistemological in nature, and I consider Winnicott and Bion as the principal contributors to the development of ontological psychoanalysis

— Ogden, Ontological,

there is no such thing as ontological psychoanalysis or epistemological psychoanalysis in pure form. They coexist in mutually enriching relationship with one another. They are ways of thinking and being—sensibilities, not “schools” of analytic thought or sets of analytic principles or analytic techniques.

— Ogden, Ontological,

I had not the slightest inclination to talk with Mr. C. about my understanding of the dream. I said to him, “What a wonderful dream that was”

— Ogden, Ontological,

Our interpretations matter not because they reveal hidden truths but because they create new possibilities for being.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

This paper focuses on the analyst’s “presencing” (being there) within the patient’s experiential world and within the grip of the psychoanalytic process, and the ensuing deep patient–analyst interconnectedness, as a fundamental dimension of analytic work.

— Eshel, Withness,

It meant pursuing the ontological (being) dimension of experience rather than the epistemological (interpretive) dimension

— Eshel, Interconnectedness

As in quantum reality, treatment thus creates psychic reality, and goes beyond the exposing or deciphering of an existing repressed or concealed psychic reality.

— Eshel, Interconnectedness

Viewed in this way, it is not a one-person or two-person psychology, but a process whereby patient and analyst become an emergent two-in-one new entity that is fundamentally inseparable into its two participants: an entity (unit or being) of interconnectedness, “twogetherness,” or “withness,” of essential inseparability.

— Eshel, Interconnectedness

While I completely agree with this fundamental point, the analytic experience of “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness is not located between patient and analyst, but is as much as possible within the patient’s world.

— Eshel, Withness,

“Presencing” and interconnectedness go beyond the level of interactions and patient–analyst relationships (object or subject relationships), even beyond intersubjectivity, to offer the opportunity for getting in touch with basic (environmental) relatedness and formative experiences of being and becoming

— Eshel, Withness,

It is an interconnected rather than interactive relatedness, a primary quality of presence that provides experience-near attunement, holding, containing, and protection, rather than interpreting patient–analyst relationships and especially patient–analyst separateness.

— Eshel, Interconnectedness(引 Ferro, 2005, p. 44)

The interpretation is essential in that it gives expression to the shift that has already occurred and makes it available to consciousness. The point though is that the essential agent of change is the inner act of the analyst and that this inner act is perceived by the patient and causes change.

— Symington, Freedom

The ‘x-phenomenon’ implies that there is a knowledge that is pre-verbal and that it is anterior to speech and therefore to interpretation.

— Symington, Freedom

Together they form an entity which we might call a corporate personality.

— Symington, Freedom

In this way transference and countertransference are two parts of a single system; together they form a unity. They are the shared illusions which the work of analysis slowly undoes.

— Symington, Freedom

What I am describing is a joint process in which the real feelings of analyst and patient are aroused by the resistant process.

— Symington, Freedom

The interpretations that follow the x-phenomenon become conscious articulations of a change that has already occurred unconsciously at the ego to ego level.

— Symington, Freedom

it doesn’t simply decode what already exists but participates in creating new forms of psychic reality.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

interpretation works through relationship rather than accuracy.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Perhaps what we’re discovering is that every taxonomy of interpretation reveals more about our need to organize mystery than about the mystery itself.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

The question is not whether to be subjective—this is impossible to avoid—but how to use one’s subjectivity in service of the patient’s growth rather than one’s own comfort.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

In the last decades of psychoanalytic thinking, the epistemological focus has shifted from realism to idealism, from a Correspondent concept of truth to an Intersubjective one.

— Yadlin-Gadot, Truth Axes

In the form they take in the Realistic-Correspondent meta-theory, both truths (Correspondent and Subjective-Existential) are found or revealed; they are neither constructed nor co-constructed.

— Yadlin-Gadot, Truth Axes

Truth axes are posited as organizing principles of the psyche aimed at achieving stable images of reality across critical dimensions of the subject’s life.

— Yadlin-Gadot, Truth Axes

I suggest that, among other factors, this space may be constituted by the evolving shared ability of the analytic dyad not to gravitate toward and collapse into one particular axis of truth.

— Yadlin-Gadot, Truth Axes

The analyst is not expected to be neutral in his or her relation to the different languages, to equally identify with them, or to be devoid of natural preferences and tendencies.

— Yadlin-Gadot, Truth Axes

it doesn’t simply decode what already exists but participates in creating new forms of psychic reality.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

the interpretation is an actual event in an evolution of O that is common to analyst and analysand

Our interpretations matter not because they reveal hidden truths but because they create new possibilities for being.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第七章

As in quantum reality, treatment thus creates psychic reality, and goes beyond the exposing or deciphering of an existing repressed or concealed psychic reality.

— Eshel, Interconnectedness

Anne-Marie concentrated, for example, on the interpretations and understanding of the here and now of the analytic situation and related to countertransference issues; my first supervisor had focused exclusively on transference and considered countertransference an impediment to the analytic work.

— Eshel, Interconnectedness

I have never found that the countertransference has helped me to understand my patient better; if I may put it like this; I have found that it has helped me to understand myself better

The analyst is not only impacted by his own unconscious process in the formulation of any interpretation, not only a full participant in any analytic enactment, but partially blind to the role he plays in helping the patient to understand both of these processes.

In this way transference and countertransference are two parts of a single system; together they form a unity. They are the shared illusions which the work of analysis slowly undoes.

— Symington, Freedom

interpretation works through relationship rather than accuracy.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

I had not the slightest inclination to talk with Mr. C. about my understanding of the dream. I said to him, “What a wonderful dream that was”

— Ogden, Ontological,

The point though is that the essential agent of change is the inner act of the analyst and that this inner act is perceived by the patient and causes change.

— Symington, Freedom

I view Freud and Klein as the founders of a form of psychoanalysis that is epistemological in nature, and I consider Winnicott and Bion as the principal contributors to the development of ontological psychoanalysis

— Ogden, Ontological,

In the last decades of psychoanalytic thinking, the epistemological focus has shifted from realism to idealism, from a Correspondent concept of truth to an Intersubjective one.

— Yadlin-Gadot, Truth Axes

When a man is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason

A 方立场:克莱因——无意识幻想自始活跃于移情,延宕诠释等于把病人独自留在恐惧里,而准确的诠释创造关系而非依赖关系——「Moreover, Klein believed that accurate interpretation creates rather than depends upon the therapeutic relationship.」(Govrin, Interpretation,第二章)
B 方立场:温尼科特——诠释应当等待病人创造性地抵达理解,且语言在解离状态下本身就是侵犯——「The analyst feels like interpreting, but this can spoil the process, and for the patient can seem like a kind of self-defence」(Govrin, Interpretation,第四章,引 Winnicott, 1971a, p. 92);奥格登进一步主张有时不诠释才是最深的干预。

A 方立场:关系/场域取向与奥格登——诠释涌现于两人之间的第三空间——「interpretation in this model emerges from what Thomas Ogden (2004) calls the analytic third—a jointly created unconscious space that exists between and beyond both participants」(Govrin, Interpretation,第六章)
B 方立场:埃谢尔——临在与同在不位于两人之间,而尽可能位于病人的世界之内——「the analytic experience of “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness is not located between patient and analyst, but is as much as possible within the patient’s world.」(Eshel, Withness,第二节)

B 方立场:戈夫林的收敛判断与创伤疗愈传统——「interpretation works through relationship rather than accuracy.」(Govrin, Interpretation,后记)

It is in you … look inward, look into your own depths, learn first and foremost to know yourself!」(Govrin, Interpretation,第四章,引 Freud, 1917, pp. 142–143)

B 方立场:斯特恩——诠释根本不是分析师的自觉创造,而是「the voice of the field」(Govrin, Interpretation,第七章,论 Stern, 2023, p. 1136)。

  2. Interpretation is fundamentally an act of power: one person claims to know something about another that they cannot know themselves.
    — Govrin, Interpretation,第一章

  3. interpretation is best thought of as the quintessential container and purveyor of intersubjectivity between patient and analyst

  4. Our interpretations matter not because they reveal hidden truths but because they create new possibilities for being.
    — Govrin, Interpretation,第七章

  5. While I completely agree with this fundamental point, the analytic experience of “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness is not located between patient and analyst, but is as much as possible within the patient’s world.
