One analyst speaks of interpretation as the precise articulation of unconscious content. Another describes it as the creation of new meaning through relational encounter. A third insists that interpretation happens not through words but through the quality of presence itself.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Interpretation, like the unconscious, the couch, or the Oedipus complex, functions as one of our field’s defining brands—a concept so central to psychoanalytic identity that we invoke it worshipfully, as if the mere act of naming it grants therapeutic power.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

it doesn’t simply decode what already exists but participates in creating new forms of psychic reality. What makes interpretation so mysterious is that it operates in the space between knowing and not-knowing, between what can be thought and what resists thinking.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

It works not by eliminating ambiguity but by making ambiguity fertile, transforming confusion from a problem to be solved into a creative space where new meanings can emerge.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Govrin

Interpretation is fundamentally an act of power: one person claims to know something about another that they cannot know themselves. This asymmetry could easily become authoritarian, even abusive.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第一章「The Living Legacy」

This ethical stance requires what we might call “epistemological humility”—the confidence to offer interpretations combined with the humility to hold them lightly.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

And that eighteen-year-old girl who walked out on Freud? She taught him perhaps the most important lesson of all: that the patient, not the analyst, has the last word.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Govrin

This convergence points toward something fundamental: interpretation works through relationship rather than accuracy.

— Govrin, Interpretation,后记「The Interpretive Paradox」

This brings us to interpretation’s final paradox: it becomes most powerful when we hold it most lightly.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

We cannot teach students to create such moments, only to recognize and avoid interfering with them when they occur. We cannot supervise the development of interpretive wisdom—we can only help clinicians to become more comfortable with the uncertainty that makes wisdom possible.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

We divide interpretations into categories—epistemological, transformative, developmental, enactive, aesthetic—but in the consulting room they blend and blur like watercolors in the rain.

— Govrin, Interpretation,后记

Bruce Reis

some interpretations aim at content, others at action. Some tell us what things mean; others do something in the telling
