本页最后处理与奥芙拉·埃谢尔(Ofra Eshel)的关系:她的临在(presencing / presencing with-in)概念正是针对重度活现(massive acting out, acting in and enactment)而提出的;但与关系取向不同,她在活现中做的事不是诠释分析关系,而是留在其中(staying with-in, communing with it)。
The concept of enactment has become central to relational psychoanalysis precisely because it captures something that traditional interpretation could never quite grasp: the way unconscious communication occurs not through symbolic representation but through lived experience.
— Govrin, Interpretation,第六章「Enactment: The Unconscious in Action」
Anthony Bass (2003) makes a crucial distinction between ordinary enactments—the quotidian mutual influences that texture every analytic hour—and what he terms capital-E Enactments, those moments when “unconscious psychic elements in patient and analyst mobilize our full, heightened attention and define, and take hold of, analytic activity for periods of time” (p. 657).
These Enactments, Bass suggests, often emerge through “mistakes, slips, and blind spots that serve as doors through which the analyst and the patient are transported into realms of personal encounter and self-experience that might otherwise remain inaccessible” (660).
Rather than standing outside the patient’s dynamics to interpret them, the analyst is inevitably drawn into enacting complementary roles.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
Enactments represent moments when both analyst and patient become locked into dissociative processes, each defending against “not-me” aspects of experience by unconsciously inducing these aspects in the other.
— Govrin, Interpretation,第六章「The Dissociative Gap as Clinical Reality」
Bromberg’s approach recognizes the enactment as a co-created dissociative field where both participants are simultaneously enacting and disowning aspects of shared emotional reality.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
Through examining four interrelated dimensions of this reconceptualization—enactment as the medium of unconscious communication, dissociation as the structure of psychic organization, the analytic third, and self-disclosure as the vehicle of authentic engagement—we can begin to understand how the relational approach transforms interpretation from an epistemological exercise into an ontological encounter.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
The therapeutic action emerges not from the analyst’s capacity to understand and explain these enactments but from both participants’ ability to survive and metabolize them together. The most profound therapeutic moments often occur precisely when both participants’ defensive organizations temporarily collapse, creating space for something genuinely new to emerge.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
The interpretation doesn’t explain the enactment; rather, the lived experience of navigating the enactment together, with all its uncertainties and ambiguities, constitutes the interpretive work itself.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
“The interpretation of dreams,” Freud famously declared, “is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind” (Freud, 1900, p. 608).
— Govrin, Interpretation,第一章「The Birth of a Method」
His vision of interpretation as the “royal road” to the unconscious set both the possibilities and the problems that subsequent thinkers would inherit.
— Govrin, Interpretation,导论
The dream is no longer simply the “royal road” to the unconscious but becomes the very mechanism by which reality itself becomes psychically digestible.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
His observations of “chronic enactments”—those seemingly stagnant periods when analyst and patient appear trapped in unproductive collusions—demonstrate how implicit alpha-function operates below the threshold of conscious awareness. During these periods, “unconscious exchanges occur between the dyad, in which the analyst provides implicit alpha-function to the patient, little by little recovering the traumatized parts” (p. 161). Chronic enactments serve multiple functions: avoiding trauma revival, using the analyst as protective shield, employing the analyst’s alpha-function, and making time for collaborative restoration of injured mental parts.
Anne-Marie concentrated, for example, on the interpretations and understanding of the here and now of the analytic situation and related to counter- transference issues; my first supervisor had focused exclusively on transference and considered countertransference an impediment to the analytic work.
— Eshel, Interconnectedness,「BE(COM)ING A PSYCHOANALYST」
While acknowledging that the patient’s projections can profoundly affect the analyst, she maintains a cautious stance: “I have never found that the countertransference has helped me to understand my patient better; if I may put it like this; I have found that it has helped me to understand myself better” (Klein, 2017b, p. 103).
— Govrin, Interpretation,第二章「The Question of Countertransference」
Klein criticized contemporary uses of projective identification that focus on analyzing the analyst’s feelings, insisting instead that the analyst’s central task is to use countertransference only as a tool for understanding the patient’s internal world, not as an object of exploration in its own right.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
The analyst is not only impacted by his own unconscious process in the formulation of any interpretation, not only a full participant in any analytic enactment, but partially blind to the role he plays in helping the patient to understand both of these processes. (p. 654)
The transformation of the relational approach rests on a deceptively simple recognition articulated by Lewis Aron (1992): “interpretation is best thought of as the quintessential container and purveyor of intersubjectivity between patient and analyst” (p. 475).
We might say that every interpretation is a kind of accidental self-portrait, painted while the artist believes he is capturing someone else’s likeness.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
As Mitchell (1988) noted, unless the analyst affectively enters the patient’s relational matrix and discovers themselves within it—becoming charmed by the patient’s entreaties, shaped by the patient’s projections, and antagonized and frustrated by the patient’s defenses—the treatment never fully engages and a certain depth is lost. This formulation challenges traditional notions of analytic neutrality and positions the analyst as an inevitable participant whose very participation becomes the vehicle for therapeutic change.
The confidence with which Mitchell later explains his motivations may itself be defensive, turning a moment of genuine uncertainty into a theoretical explanation. These ambiguities are not failures of the relational approach, but rather its most honest acknowledgment: that every interpretation, even those emerging through enactment, remains irreducibly ambiguous, open to multiple meanings that can never be fully resolved.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
Both were locked in a mutual enactment—she presenting an impossible perfection while he absorbed the shame of professional inadequacy. The breakthrough came not through a brilliant interpretation but through Stern’s authentic recognition of the patient’s underlying loneliness—a recognition that emerged from his willingness to tolerate his own shame and inadequacy long enough for a new perception to form.
The interpretation was co-created through the relational process rather than delivered from outside it.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
although he had already recounted far more violent and bizarre scenes—perhaps because of this inundating, wretched cheapness. I was thinking to myself: What is the point of all the hard work, of this entire analysis, the great investment of money and years? Better go to a whore every day, get beaten up for five minutes, pay 100 shekels, and be done with it. And I withdrew, fell silent. Then I noticed that he became very agitated, in sharp contrast to his former quiet and detached manner.
— Eshel, Withness,「CLINICAL ILLUSTRATION」
【原文校勘】该句前半在源文件中被 PDF 页眉碎片污染,作「the first time in this analysis, I felt great tiredness and For disgust」——句首的 “For” 被转换器移位至 “and” 与 “disgust” 之间。
And I realized he sensed and knew that I had abandoned him, left him wounded and lost on the battlefield, and had gone off to save myself.
— Eshel, Withness,「CLINICAL ILLUSTRATION」
Thus I returned to this despicable, despairing, and desperate place, his and mine, and said: “You are so desperate because you felt that I’d given up. And when we both give up, there’s nothing more to hold on to. It’s really very despairing, but we are going on.” He lay back quietly, tears in his eyes for the first time in analysis (perhaps in his life), and said, “Death can be so cheap. You should lock me up inside the treatment.”
— Eshel, Withness,「CLINICAL ILLUSTRATION」
The enactment that Mitchell describes began with his forgetting an early morning appointment he had scheduled to accommodate Ed’s dental emergency. Finding Ed waiting in the bitter cold, Mitchell apologized and hurried them inside. Ed’s response—“So, you’re a creature of habit”—initiated a complex dance around guilt, reparation, and the possibility of ordinary human fallibility. When Mitchell charged Ed one-third of the usual fee for their abbreviated session, Ed was furious, experiencing this as petty and ungenerous. Mitchell’s decision not to waive the fee emerged from his recognition that doing so would constitute “appeasing him, buying him off”—perpetuating rather than transforming Ed’s internal world where guilt must always be erased through reparative action rather than borne as part of human experience.
What makes this vignette particularly instructive is how it demonstrates that interpretation in the relational model emerges through rather than about enactment. Mitchell doesn’t simply interpret Ed’s reaction; he participates in creating a new relational experience where guilt can be tolerated rather than evacuated, where imperfection doesn’t require compensation, where two people can fail each other and remain in a relationship.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
I first developed this approach with regard to massive acting out, acting in, and enactment, arguing that the fate of these acting situations in the therapeutic work is determined largely by the analyst’s willingness and ability to give him- or herself over to “being there,” staying within the intense impact of the acting situation and communing with it (Eshel 1998a, 1998b).
— Eshel, Withness,「WHAT KIND OF ANALYTIC PRESENCE AND “WITHNESS” WOULD THAT BE?」
I began to develop this approach with regard to massive acting out, acting in and enactment, arguing that the fate of these acting situations in the therapeutic work is determined largely by the analyst’s willingness and ability to give himself or herself over to being with-in there, staying with the intense impact of the acting situation and communing with it (Eshel, 1998a, 1998b).
— Eshel, Interconnectedness,「THE BE(COM)ING OF A NEW DIMENSION」
Presencing is essentially the analyst’s deep acceptance of the necessity of becoming an embedded, fundamental, and sustaining functioning presence within difficult treatment situations and enactments—thereby experiencing, withstanding, processing, and gradually transforming, from within, the repetitive cycle of pathological self–other relations and defenses.
— Eshel, Interconnectedness,「THE BE(COM)ING OF A NEW DIMENSION」
治疗行动来自「both participants’ ability to survive and metabolize them together」;诠释「emerges through rather than about enactment」,最终产生共同建构的诠释(Govrin, Interpretation,第六章)。
临在是「a primary quality of presence, a multiple-function presence or deep availability that focuses on experience-near attunement, receptive capacity, holding, containing, and protection, rather than proffering interpretations of the analytic relationships and especially of patient–analyst separateness」(Eshel, Withness,首节)。I 篇的平行表述:「rather than interpreting patient–analyst relationships and especially patient–analyst separateness」(Eshel, Interconnectedness,「THE BE(COM)ING OF A NEW DIMENSION」)。
她引博拉斯(Bollas, 1987)为这一立场背书:「The psychoanalyst’s countertransference task within this transference is to allow himself to be assumed by the patient and not to interpret unless the patient needs it」(Eshel, Withness,注释 1,引 Bollas, p. 256)。
Jay Greenberg’s (2001) critique provides a necessary counterpoint to the enthusiasm surrounding analyst self-disclosure. His observation that relational case examples invariably portray analysts who “throw away the book” in moments of crisis raises important questions about whose needs are being served. In a profession under siege, analysts may be particularly vulnerable to what Greenberg calls “therapeutic zeal”—the wish to rescue, to heal, to transform through personal engagement rather than analytic understanding.
Greenberg’s most provocative suggestion is that the relational emphasis on creating novel experiences may actually foreclose deeper engagement with the patient’s psychic reality. When the analyst acts quickly to provide a corrective experience, they may prevent both participants from fully confronting the depth and intensity of the patient’s transference. Jon Mills (2017) extends this critique, arguing that excessive emphasis on mutuality risks ignoring the fundamental asymmetries that structure the analytic relationship—primarily that the patient seeks help and that the analyst is being paid as an authority.
The risk inherent in Bromberg’s approach may be the gradual erosion of what makes psychoanalysis distinctively analytic. When the analyst becomes so focused on managing dissociative enactments and facilitating self-state communication, the capacity for sustained thought about unconscious process may atrophy. The analyst’s mind, constantly alert to relational nuance and affective shifts, may lose the contemplative quality that allows for deeper pattern recognition across time.
— Govrin, Interpretation,第六章「Critical Reflections on the Dissociative Turn」
- Mitchell、Bass、Bromberg、Stern、Aron、Greenberg、Mills、Cassorla
- 埃谢尔一侧的材料充足:其临在概念的提出语境(重度活现)在两篇中各有明确原文,且措辞互补(W 篇作 “give him- or herself over to ‘being there’“;I 篇作 “give himself or herself over to being with-in there”)。
-
The concept of enactment has become central to relational psychoanalysis precisely because it captures something that traditional interpretation could never quite grasp: the way unconscious communication occurs not through symbolic representation but through lived experience.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
“mistakes, slips, and blind spots that serve as doors through which the analyst and the patient are transported into realms of personal encounter and self-experience that might otherwise remain inaccessible”
The interpretation doesn’t explain the enactment; rather, the lived experience of navigating the enactment together, with all its uncertainties and ambiguities, constitutes the interpretive work itself.
— Govrin, Interpretation,
The analyst is not only impacted by his own unconscious process in the formulation of any interpretation, not only a full participant in any analytic enactment, but partially blind to the role he plays in helping the patient to understand both of these processes.
