In this respect, it is closely related to Ogden’s (1997) conception of the intersubjective analytic third, and I share his thinking that “do[es] not view transference and countertransference as separate entities that arise in response to one another; rather, I understand these terms to refer to aspects of a single intersubjective totality” (p. 25).

— Eshel, Withness,「WHAT KIND OF ANALYTIC PRESENCE AND “WITHNESS” WOULD THAT BE?」

The concept of the analytic third represents perhaps the most radical departure from traditional psychoanalytic epistemology, fundamentally reconceptualizing where interpretation originates and how therapeutic meaning emerges.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Neither residing in the patient’s unconscious waiting to be discovered, nor in the analyst’s mind waiting to be delivered, interpretation in this model emerges from what Thomas Ogden (2004) calls the analytic third—a jointly created unconscious space that exists between and beyond both participants.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

This third is not simply the sum of two subjectivities, but rather a dialectical creation that simultaneously preserves and negates the separateness of each participant.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

The interpretation belongs to neither and both simultaneously.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

The analyst serves as what Ogden calls a “host” to the analytic third, maintaining conditions for its existence while remaining open to being transformed by what emerges within it.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

speaking (or relating in other forms) from, not about, reverie experience (Ogden 1994)

— Ogden, Ontological,

Recent contributions include Ogden’s (2009) formulation of what he views as Bion’s second principle of mental functioning: “It takes two minds to think one’s most disturbing, previously…

— Eshel, Withness(引 Ogden, 2009, p. 100)

The conceptualizations of the Barangers’ work of confluence (2009) and Ferro’s bipersonal field (1999, 2009, 2010; see also Ferro and Basile 2009) both emphasize the formation of a new identity—the analytic field—which is created between patient and analyst within the unit that they form in the session.

— Eshel, Withness,「WHAT KIND OF ANALYTIC PRESENCE AND “WITHNESS” WOULD THAT BE?」

“Such a description illustrates the fundamental point that the field must get ill with the patient’s own illness in order to be then cured of it” (Ferro 2010, p. 418).

— Eshel, Withness(引 Ferro, 2010, p. 418)

bipersonal field into a multi-personal framework, focusing on “functional aggregates”—affective holograms jointly constructed by patient and analyst in a shared mental space where meaning is co-created rather than discovered.

Rather than viewing them as coded messages about past trauma or internal phantasies requiring decoding, he conceptualizes them as narrative derivatives of alpha elements—real-time pictographs of the emotional experience unfolding within what he terms the analytic field

premature interpretive closure—what he describes as attempts to reveal true truth—functions as a form of intellectual violence that forecloses possibility rather than opening it

a breathing center that must constantly modulate the breaths of the field according to necessity

— Govrin, Interpretation,第三章「The Evolution Toward Dream-Work」

an attunement not to what the patient really means but to what emerges between the participants

interpretation is best thought of as the quintessential container and purveyor of intersubjectivity between patient and analyst

The analyst is not only impacted by his own unconscious process in the formulation of any interpretation, not only a full participant in any analytic enactment, but partially blind to the role he plays in helping the patient to understand both of these processes.

This third space is fragile and constantly under threat of collapse into what Benjamin terms “doer and done to” dynamics, where complementarity replaces mutuality and recognition fails.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第六章

The restoration of thirdness becomes a precondition for genuine interpretive work.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Stern’s radical proposition is that interpretations are not the analyst’s conscious creations, but rather they are “the voice of the field”

This paper focuses on the analyst’s “presencing” (being there) within the patient’s experiential world and within the grip of the psychoanalytic process, and the ensuing deep patient–analyst interconnectedness, as a fundamental dimension of analytic work.

— Eshel, Withness,

While I completely agree with this fundamental point, the analytic experience of “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness is not located between patient and analyst, but is as much as possible within the patient’s world. (I have pointed this out earlier with regard to Ogden’s intersubjective third.)

— Eshel, Withness,「WHAT KIND OF ANALYTIC PRESENCE AND “WITHNESS” WOULD THAT BE?」

However, I differ from Ogden in the emphasis that he places on the analyst’s own subjective past experiences and memories, which are evoked in the analyst’s mind in the session. I reach out toward the analyst’s embeddedness in the patient’s subjective reality, especially as a necessary, functioning presence.

— Eshel, Withness,

The analyst thus becomes part of the patient’s state of being and experiencing, to the extent of becoming psychically akin to a transplant or to chimeric antibodies (Eshel 2012); or, put differently, of receding toward the vanishing point in a perspective drawing.

— Eshel, Withness,

Thus, working within this dimension of analytic presence and interconnectedness has less to do with object relationships than with the emergence of a new place or psychic space-time, and a new possibility of experiencing and becoming, via the analyst’s being with-in and staying interconnected to the patient’s unbearable core of experience.

— Eshel, Withness,

“Presencing” and interconnectedness go beyond the level of interactions and patient–analyst relationships (object or subject relationships), even beyond intersubjectivity, to offer the opportunity for getting in touch with basic (environmental) relatedness and formative experiences of being and becoming

— Eshel, Withness,

patient and analyst forge an emergent new entity of interconnectedness or “withness” that goes beyond the confines of their separate subjectivities and the simple summation of the two.

— Eshel, Withness,

This seems to me closely related to Ferro’s (2005) description of “the analyst’s way of being in the session… without any particular interpretive caesura” (p. 44).

— Eshel, Withness,

It is primarily an interconnected relatedness, rather than an interactive relationship, and it concentrates on the ontological (being) quality of the analytic experience that is lived through with the analyst, rather than on epistemological and interpretive qualities.

— Eshel, Withness,

她与奥格登的分歧点正在于:奥格登强调「分析师自己被唤起的主观过去经验与记忆」,而她「reach out toward the analyst’s embeddedness in the patient’s subjective reality」。

the indivisibility of the transference ↔ countertransference in the analyst’s reverie … the necessity for the analyst to experience his own inner version of what the analysand is suffering from; to “become” the analysand’s anguish and agony. Bion (1967, 1970) termed this phenomenon “transformation in O within the analyst.”

— Eshel, Withness(引 Grotstein, 2010, p. 25)

“With this [O] the analyst cannot be identified; he must be it” (p. 27, italics in original)

— Eshel, Withness(引 Bion, 1970, p. 27)

Drawing heavily on Bion’s writing, Vermote discerns three distinct zones of psychic functioning with varying degrees of differentiation, different major psychoanalytic models, and clinical implications for the analyst: 1. Reason—Oedipal, understanding Ucs. System (Freud, Klein); 2. Transformation in Knowledge—container-contained, reverie, dream-work, alpha-function (Bion, Marty, de M’Uzan, Bollas, Botella and Botella, Ogden, Ferro); 3. Transformation in O, when dealing with the most non-thought, unknown, undifferentiated zone of psychic functioning (Winnicott, Milner, late Bion, late Lacan).

— Eshel, Withness(引 Vermote, 2013)

In my view, the emerging dimension of the analyst’s “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness that I am proposing reaches down to this third, most undifferentiated and fundamental analytic functioning and transformation in O.

— Eshel, Withness,

Traumatic experience often destroys the capacity for thirdness, trapping individuals in rigid self-other configurations that preclude genuine intersubjective meeting.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

And I add: there is no end unless the bottom of the trough has been reached*, un-* less the thing feared has been experienced in a compassionate holding, within the analyst’s “presencing” and interconnecting with the patient’s gripping, unbearable agony, devastation, and death. Analyst-and-patient t(w)ogether there, with-in.

— Eshel, Withness,

A 方(奥格登的分析性第三方、费罗的场论、关系取向主体间性):意义在共享空间中共同生成——「a jointly created unconscious space that exists between and beyond both participants」;费罗经埃谢尔转述:场域「is created between patient and analyst within the unit that they form in the session」;阿隆:诠释是「the quintessential container and purveyor of intersubjectivity between patient and analyst」。
B 方(埃谢尔的同在):位置在「之内」——「the analytic experience of “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness is not located between patient and analyst, but is as much as possible within the patient’s world.」;且「even beyond intersubjectivity」;在层次上自列于 Vermote 第三区(O 中的转化),而把奥格登与费罗列入第二区(知识中的转化)。

A 方(奥格登):分析师从遐想经验「而言说」,而非关于它言说——「speaking (or relating in other forms) from, not about, reverie experience (Ogden 1994)」(Ogden, Ontological,第一节)。
B 方(埃谢尔):「I differ from Ogden in the emphasis that he places on the analyst’s own subjective past experiences and memories, which are evoked in the analyst’s mind in the session. I reach out toward the analyst’s embeddedness in the patient’s subjective reality」(Eshel, Withness)。
比昂本人的「the analyst cannot be identified [with O]; he must be it」与格罗特斯坦的「to “become” the analysand’s anguish and agony」站在埃谢尔一侧,说明此分歧穿过比昂传统内部,而非发生在传统之间。

  1. While I completely agree with this fundamental point, the analytic experience of “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness is not located between patient and analyst, but is as much as possible within the patient’s world. (I have pointed this out earlier with regard to Ogden’s intersubjective third.)
    — Eshel, Withness

  2. However, I differ from Ogden in the emphasis that he places on the analyst’s own subjective past experiences and memories, which are evoked in the analyst’s mind in the session. I reach out toward the analyst’s embeddedness in the patient’s subjective reality, especially as a necessary, functioning presence.
    — Eshel, Withness

  3. “Presencing” and interconnectedness go beyond the level of interactions and patient–analyst relationships (object or subject relationships), even beyond intersubjectivity, to offer the opportunity for getting in touch with basic (environmental) relatedness and formative experiences of being and becoming
    — Eshel, Withness

  4. working within this dimension of analytic presence and interconnectedness has less to do with object relationships than with the emergence of a new place or psychic space-time, and a new possibility of experiencing and becoming, via the analyst’s being with-in and staying interconnected to the patient’s unbearable core of experience.
    — Eshel, Withness,

  5. In my view, the emerging dimension of the analyst’s “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness that I am proposing reaches down to this third, most undifferentiated and fundamental analytic functioning and transformation in O.
    — Eshel, Withness(引 Vermote, 2013)

  6. interpretation in this model emerges from what Thomas Ogden (2004) calls the analytic third—a jointly created unconscious space that exists between and beyond both participants

  7. This third is not simply the sum of two subjectivities, but rather a dialectical creation that simultaneously preserves and negates the separateness of each participant.
    — Govrin, Interpretation,第六章

    — Eshel, Withness

  9. an attunement not to what the patient really means but to what emerges between the participants

  10. speaking (or relating in other forms) from, not about, reverie experience (Ogden 1994)
    — Ogden, Ontological,第一节

  11. “With this [O] the analyst cannot be identified; he must be it”
    — Eshel, Withness(引 Bion, 1970, p. 27)
