与它配套的另外两个术语是 at-one-ment(与 O 合一)与 transformation O→K(从 O 到可被言说的知识 K 的转化)。

Govrin

O represents the thing-in-itself of the analytic encounter, the ultimate reality, or “invariance”—the unknowable essence that underlies all psychoanalytic phenomena but can never be directly apprehended

— Govrin, Interpretation,第三章「The Mystery of O and the Limits of Language in Bionian Interpretation」(参 Sandler, 2005, p. 178)

Unlike traditional psychoanalytic concepts that seek to make the unconscious conscious, O deliberately preserves mystery as an essential element of human experience. It is not something to be discovered or decoded, but rather approached with what Bion calls “awe” and “reverence”—emotional states that acknowledge the limits of rational understanding while remaining open to transformation.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

His concept of “O”—the unknowable ultimate reality of emotional experience—challenged analysts to abandon their interpretive certainties in favor of what he called “negative capability.”

— Govrin, Interpretation,「The Organization of This Book」

Traditional interpretation operates within what Bion calls the “Klink”—the domain of knowing, learning, and understanding. The analyst gathers information about the patient’s history, observes patterns, applies theoretical frameworks, and offers interpretations designed to increase insight.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

This approach, while valuable, ultimately remains trapped within the realm of what can be consciously grasped and verbally articulated. There is something deeply familiar about this mode of working—it satisfies our need to understand, to make sense, to feel competent in our professional role. Yet Bion suggests that this very familiarity may be precisely what prevents us from encountering the more elusive dimensions of psychic reality.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

The movement from K to O represents more than a technical adjustment; it constitutes a fundamental reorientation of analytic attention. Where K seeks to know about the patient, O requires that we become present with what the patient is becoming.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第三章

Bion’s approach requires a fundamental shift from K to O—from knowing to being. Bion thought that the analyst’s concern is not with what can be known about the patient but with what the patient is becoming in the present moment

Consider the difference between saying “You seem angry because your mother didn’t validate your needs” and saying “Something fierce is stirring in the room right now.” The first interpretation operates within the Klink, connecting present experience to past understanding through causal explanation. The second attempts to stay closer to O, acknowledging the emergence of something that cannot yet be fully grasped or explained.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

These less saturated interpretations can create space for the patient’s own language to emerge, allowing them to approach their experience without the constraint of predetermined meanings.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

This understanding leads us to examine one of Bion’s most profound concepts: atonement, or at-one-ment. The hyphenated spelling is deliberate, emphasizing not religious expiation but a state of being at one with ultimate reality.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

The central postulate is that atonement with ultimate reality, or O, as I have called it to avoid involvement with existing associations, is essential to harmonious mental growth

Rather than achieving knowledge about unconscious conflicts or developmental failures, the analytic process seeks to achieve a state of being that harmonizes with reality as it actually is, rather than as we wish it to be or fear it might be.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Reality cannot be known but must be “been”—like potatoes that can be grown or eaten but not sung. The analyst must shift from knowing about the patient’s reality to being with it.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

With this [O] the analyst cannot be identified; he must be it

— Eshel, Withness,「Compassion」(引 Bion, 1970, p. 27,原文着重)

Eshel

Later on, Bion (1970) goes further and presents his profound conception of at-one-ment and the analyst’s being and becoming O, the unknown and unknowable, ultimate emotional reality of the patient

— Eshel, Withness,「Compassion」

I wish to propose here the notion of psychoanalyticwithness”—the being there, within the experience of suffering, becoming at-one with it, in deep patient–analyst interconnectedness.

— Eshel, Withness,「Compassion」

  1. Transformation in Knowledge—container-contained, reverie, dream-work, alpha-function (Bion, Marty, de M’Uzan, Bollas, Botella and Botella, Ogden, Ferro);

— Eshel, Withness,「What Kind of Analytic Presence and “Withness” Would That Be?」(引 Vermote, 2013)

  1. Transformation in O, when dealing with the most non- thought, unknown, undifferentiated zone of psychic functioning (Winnicott, Milner, late Bion, late Lacan). Rather than epistemological exploration (knowing), the focus here is on the unknown and unknowable, ultimate, emotional reality-O, the primacy of being at-one with the patient’s emotional reality, and a lived, new experience.

— Eshel, Withness,「What Kind of Analytic Presence and “Withness” Would That Be?」(引 Vermote, 2013)

For me, it is in this zone of analytic functioning that Bion’s (1970) radical words acquire their full meaning: “at-one-ment with it [O] and evolution… In practice this means not that the analyst recalls some relevant memory but that a relevant constellation will be evoked during the process of at-one-ment with O, the process denoted by transformation O → K”

— Eshel, Withness,「What Kind of Analytic Presence and “Withness” Would That Be?」(引 Bion, 1970, pp. 30, 33,原文着重)

Eshel

In my view, the emerging dimension of the analyst’s “presencing” and “withness” or interconnectedness that I am proposing reaches down to this third, most undifferentiated and fundamental analytic functioning and transformation in O.

— Eshel, Withness,「What Kind of Analytic Presence and “Withness” Would That Be?」

“Presencing” and interconnectedness go beyond the level of interactions and patient–analyst relationships (object or subject relationships), even beyond intersubjectivity, to offer the opportunity for getting in touch with basic (environmental) relatedness and formative experiences of being and becoming

— Eshel, Withness,「What Kind of Analytic Presence and “Withness” Would That Be?」

Grotstein:

the necessity for the analyst to experience his own inner version of what the analysand is suffering from; to “become” the analysand’s anguish and agony. Bion (1967, 1970) termed this phenomenon “transformation in O within the analyst.”

— Eshel, Withness,「Compassion」(引 Grotstein, 2010, p. 25,原文着重)

A radical change has occurred, rather unobtrusively, in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis in the course of the past 70 years, a change for which, until recently, I have not had a name. That transformation involves a shift in emphasis from epistemological (pertaining to knowing and understanding) psychoanalysis to ontological (pertaining to being and becoming) psychoanalysis.

— Ogden, Ontological,第一章「Epistemological and Ontological Psychoanalysis」

I view Freud and Klein as the founders of a form of psychoanalysis that is epistemological in nature, and I consider Winnicott and Bion as the principal contributors to the development of ontological psychoanalysis

— Ogden, Ontological,第一章

As I read Bion, throughout his opus, he is principally an ontological thinker.

— Ogden, Ontological,第三章「Bion’s Contributions to」

being has supplanted understanding; the analyst does not come to know or understand or comprehend or apprehend the reality of what is happening in the session, he “intuits” it, he becomes “at one” with it, he is fully present in experiencing the present moment.

— Ogden, Ontological,第三章

because memory is what we think we know based on what no longer exists, and is no longer knowable. And we must renounce “desires for results, ‘cure,’ or even understanding”

therapeutic action characterizing ontological psychoanalysis involves providing an interpersonal context in which forms of experiencing, states of being, come to life in the analytic relationship that were previously unimaginable by the patient

— Ogden, Ontological,

For Bion, analysts don’t come to know what’s happening in sessions but “intuit” it, becoming “at one” with it.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第七章第四节「From Knowing to Being—The Ontological Turn」

Our interpretations matter not because they reveal hidden truths but because they create new possibilities for being.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

The clinical implications become clear when Bion states that “the interpretation is an actual event in an evolution of O that is common to analyst and analysand” (Bion, 1970, p. 27). This transforms our understanding of what happens when we speak in the consulting room. The interpretation does not describe or explain reality—it participates in reality’s evolution. It is not a statement about truth but an enactment of truth’s emergence.

This is why Bion insists that “formulations of the events of analysis made in the course of analysis must possess value different from that of formulations made extra-sessionally” … The living interpretation, offered in the heat of the analytic moment, conducts transformation in O rather than mere knowledge about O.

This distinction helps to explain why interpretations that seem theoretically correct can fall completely flat, while others that emerge spontaneously from the analyst’s state of at-one-ment can transform both participants. The difference lies not in the content of the words but in the quality of being from which they emerge.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

The analyst who achieves this state discovers that “in so far as the analyst becomes O he is able to know the events that are evolutions of O”

But this “becoming” requires a particular discipline—what Bion calls faith, “faith that there is an ultimate reality and truth—the unknown, unknowable, ‘formless infinite’”

As Bion observed, drawing on the mystic tradition, those who have contacted O must develop a capacity to tolerate paradoxes.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第三章

the discoverer must be prepared to find that he has started another round of group oscillations. Persecution↔Depression

Although Bion stopped writing explicitly about the selected fact after 1965, this does not mean he abandoned the concept. The selected fact evolved and developed into the concept of O, which made its debut in “Transformations.” The connection between these concepts is profound: the selected fact is present indirectly in his concept of O, and contact with O is really the only way one could possibly intuit the selected fact.

— Govrin, Interpretation,第三章「The Selected Fact」

The analyst, like Poincaré’s mathematician confronting disparate mathematical elements, searches for that which might suddenly “introduce order where the appearance of disorder reigned”

The selected fact belongs to the realm of discovery—it is something the patient must find for themselves … Interpretation, however, serves a different master: repair rather than discovery.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

Progress cannot be measured simply in terms of symptom reduction or increased self- understanding, though these may certainly occur. Instead, the analyst must attend to subtler indicators: the patient’s growing capacity to tolerate uncertainty, their increasing ability to remain present with difficult emotions, their developing faith in the possibility of truth beyond immediate understanding.

— Govrin, Interpretation,

A 方立场:Ogden(经 Eshel 转述)强调分析师自身的主体性过去经验与记忆——「I differ from Ogden in the emphasis that he places on the analyst’s own subjective past experiences and memories, which are evoked in the analyst’s mind in the session.」(Eshel, Withness,「What Kind of Analytic Presence and “Withness” Would That Be?」)
B 方立场:Eshel 伸向分析师嵌入病人的主观现实——「I reach out toward the analyst’s embeddedness in the patient’s subjective reality, especially as a necessary, functioning presence.」(Eshel, Withness,同节)

transformation in O within the analyst分析师内部的 O 中转化(Grotstein 语)反移情诠释
